Canadian officials say they can't be America's drug store
By TONY BURBECK / 6NEWS
June 30, 2005 - Even though it is illegal, some patients get their prescriptions filled in Canada to save money. Canadian health officials want tighter control over internet pharmacies that are used by millions of Americans, and they said a new law cracking down could be just months away. Canada cant be a drug store for the US, said Ujjal Dosanjh, Canadas Health Minister.
That doesnt stop an estimated 48 million Americans from trying. Buying drugs from Canada here is illegal, but as easy as clicking your mouse.
Dosanjh is calling for a ban on bulk drug exports to prevent shortages for Canadians and to protect against unethical conduct. To ensure a doctor-patient relationship for any cross-border drug sales, said Dosanj.
The appeal of Canadian drugs for Americas is privacy and price. Often Canadian drugs cost 20 to 80 percent less than drugs in the states. We do get comments like that from people, but its a huge risk that theyre taking because we dont know whos sending them these days, said Lori Ulrich a pharmacist at the Nalle Pharmacy.
Its the same thing you get here, Bob Neal, a local man who get his drugs from Canada, asserted.
The FDA disagrees. Companies like RX Depot have been shut down. The FDA said it puts the public at risk and imported drugs safety and potency often arent what prescribed here.
You might get another drug from Canada that you may have to take multiple times per day, but you may not know that because youre not sure how its made and who makes it, said Ulrich.
Canadas Health Minister said he wants that new law in effect by the fall. That law comes into play at a time when some US lawmakers want to legalize importing drugs from Canada over the internet.
Dosanjh plans legislation for Internet pharmacies
By GLORIA GALLOWAY
Ottawa - June 30, 2005 - Federal Health Minister Ujjal Dosanjh has announced plans to tighten the reins on Internet pharmacies selling drugs to people in the United States.
Mr. Dosanjh said yesterday that he will bring in legislation this fall to permit the Canadian government to limit the bulk export of pharmaceuticals in circumstances where the reduced supply could jeopardize the safety of Canadians.
In addition, he said he will consult doctors and others to find ways of ensuring that there is an actual doctor-patient relationship between the person receiving the drugs and the medical professional who has prescribed them.
Answer the Phone: Your Identity is on the Line
Beverly Hills, CA -- (ArriveNet - May 06, 2005) -- There hasn't been much good news in the battle against identity theft lately, with fraudsters staying one step ahead of the game. But don't panic, our old friend the telephone has come to the rescue.
We're all aware of the problem of identity theft, but did you know that your local pizza chain has had a solution for years? You recognize it as the system that prevents little Johnny from having twenty pizzas delivered to your door at midnight: the pizza chain calls you immediately after the order is placed to verify the validity of the order. Because little Johnny is afraid to be caught, he'll think twice about causing this pizza-related havoc.
TeleSign's patent-pending verification system has transferred this pizza concept to the high-tech world. It works like this: after filling out a form on a website, the user is prompted to enter his phone number. A robotic system then places a call to that number and speaks aloud a unique three digit code. Once that code is entered into the website, the authentication is complete. This system can be implemented at any point on a website: at registration, purchase, a specific time interval, or at the request of a user.
Email verification is the current standard for user authentication, but email may end up filtered, junked, bulked, or trashed. Because of spam, viruses, and phishing, email filtering has become so aggressive that even legitimate emails don't reach the inbox. But a telephone call cannot be stopped, making this the perfect time for the introduction of TeleSigns solution.
The future of ecommerce is threatened by rampant fraud and lack of trust. TeleSign will force anonymous users to expose their faces by revealing their working phone numbers.
