Stay Away From Prempro and Premarin

Stay Away From Prempro and Premarin, Study Says; Bio-Identical Hormones are Safe and Do Not Trigger Breast Cancer, Advises Dr. C.W. Randolph

Bio-Identical Progesterone is safe, actually decreasing the risk of breast cancer, says author of "From Hormone Hell to Hormone Well."

Jacksonville, FL (PRWeb) December 24, 2006 -- Women are wondering why bio-identical hormones are safe and cancer protective, while synthetic hormones are linked to an increased risk of breast cancer after all of the recent media attention.

"All hormones are not the same," says C.W. Randolph, author of the best selling book "From Hormone Hell to Hormone Well. "Bio-identical progesterone is so safe that in some cases, doctors give it to women who are at risk of losing a baby while if they gave her progestin it would be lethal to the child, and bio-identical progesterone has also shown to protect against breast cancer."

C.W. Randolph, Jr., M.D., R.Ph., both a trained pharmacist and a practicing board certified gynecologist, is one of the nation's leading authorities on bio-identical hormone therapies

"In the study released this month, there is a reported 7.2 percent decline in breast cancer rates of women over 50," said Dr. Randolph. "This is linked to the fact that, since the Women's Health Initiative Study was published in 2002 linking synthetic hormones such as Premarin and Prempro to an increase risk of breast cancer, many women decided to go cold turkey and stop filling their prescriptions for synthetic hormone therapies."

According to Dr. Randolph, the drop in the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer is also directly linked to the large number of women who either chose to switch to bio-identical hormone therapies or simply chose bio-identical hormone replacement as their first choice in treatment.

"Over 38 million American women are now entering pre-menopause or menopause and they are seeking alternative solutions to treat the symptoms associated with PMS and menopause," says Dr. Randolph. "Thankfully the Women's Health Initiative study showing that synthetic hormones increase a woman's risk of breast cancer has made women seek alternative methods such as bio-identical hormones. The prescribed synthetic hormones such as Premarin or Prempro, remain a potential poison to women and I'm glad that finally significant changes are being made in women's receptivity to these potential time bombs."

When asked to explain how bio-identical hormones differ from synthetic hormones, Dr. Randolph stated: "Bio-identical hormones are exactly the same molecular structure as the hormone produced within the body. As a result, the body's hormone receptors recognize bio-identical hormones and accept them. Synthetic hormones have a slightly different molecular structure. Even a small difference can trigger side effects at the cellular level. An increased risk of cancer is one of those side effects."

"For example, Progestin, the molecular compound found in Prempro, is a synthetic form of progesterone whose molecular structure has been changed. It can trigger dangerous side effects in the body. Bio-identical progesterone is very different from synthetic progestin. "Bio-identical progesterone is not only safe to use, it can help decrease a woman's risk for developing cancer," says Dr. Randolph. "I currently lecture to physicians around the country sharing clinical studies and medical data that validates the fact that bio-identical progesterone has many cancer-protective benefits. The bio-chemistry of why this is so is actually quite simple: progesterone neutralizes the cancer-promoting properties associated with too much estrogen in the body. While estrogen promotes cell proliferation, or cell growth, progesterone decreases cell growth. Too much cell growth is a precursor for cancer."

"In my gynecology practice, I have prescribed bio-identical progesterone for over a decade and I have never had a patient on my bio-identical hormone regimen develop cancer. I even have patients who are breast cancer survivors who I prescribe bio-identical progesterone because my experience, and the research shows, that the progesterone can play a key role in preventing a recurrence of the original cancer."

"Obviously, more studies are needed to validate the cancer-protective properties of bio-identical progesterone."

Why aren't there more clinical studies investigating the safety and efficacy of bio-identical hormones? According to Dr. Randolph, it really boils down to two things: 1) lack of knowledge within the medical community because physicians have not been educated in medical school about the option of bio-identical hormone replacement and 2) the ability of major pharmaceutical companies to twist and manipulate the idea of hormone replacement to capitalize on a business opportunity.

"Synthetic hormones are produced in a lab and have a genetically modified structure, they can be patented." Dr. Randolph said, "This allows big drug companies to market and sell this product exclusively, thus creating profits. Big pharmaceutical companies would not market, or fund research studies investigating, bio-identical hormones. Why should they? There is no way for them to make a buck on products that can't be patented."

"The pharmaceutical industry is the top funder of specialty forums and continuing medical education meetings for doctors. They offer physicians some nice 'perks,' such as dinners, fishing trips and sporting event tickets. Credible or questionable, the dollars the pharmaceutical companies spend gets them the ear of the physician."

"Smart, informed and demanding women are finding their voice and they want data that they can believe and trust," concludes Dr. Randolph. "I believe every physician should embody their original role as patient advocate and demand that the safety and effectiveness of bio-identical hormones be a top priority for each medical university's research agenda. The pharmaceutical industry's marketing hype needs to be replaced with solid medical evidence. Bio-identical hormone replacement is a safe and effective option for women and men seeking treatment for hormone imbalances."

  Who cares about Telemedicine?

Could Telemedicine's Impact on Health Care Cause Investors to Take Notice?

Will One Young Company, Veridigm Inc., Make Telemedicine a Household Name?

Los Angeles, CA (PRWeb) December 5, 2006 -- Imagine visiting your doctor and at the same time consulting with a specialist in another city. Or, what if medical students in Los Angeles could observe live heart surgery in New York and monitor the patient's vital signs while receiving commentary by a cardiologist from the Cleveland Clinic? Welcome to the world of Telemedicine--a term used to describe a remote doctor-patient or doctor-doctor encounter using two-way video and audio, in addition to the transmission of medical data. Telemedicine offers new horizons in health care.

Whether remotely viewing patients through specialized medical instruments such as a video otoscope, which allows the doctor to 'see' inside a patient's ear, or an electronic stethoscope, which facilitates listening to the patient's heartbeat, or transmitting medical images for "real-time" review, medical video conferencing and data transmission are becoming invaluable tools in the provision of health care.

According to Veridigm Inc. (OTCBB:ENSY), a young telemedicine company, technology may never replace the human factor, but telemedicine, a multi-billion dollar industry, has the potential to extend the human touch and transform the way health care is delivered. The widespread adoption of this technology enables doctors and patients in separate locations to interact in real-time while transmitting complex diagnostic data for simultaneous review. The digitization of medical records, together with the advent of new medical technologies, should only serve to increase the demand for telemedicine services.

As telemedicine technologies continue to experience rapid growth--with companies like AT&T, Intel, and Sony Electronics providing the bandwidth and hardware--the doors to the widespread adoption of telemedicine are opening for innovative companies with proprietary technologies like Veridigm.

For the safe transmission of both medical data and video conferencing between doctor and patient, Veridigm maintains and operates its own secure private network--one that never touches the publicly shared internet--to safely transmit two-way, real-time "television" quality video, audio, and data with no perceptible delay. Veridigm's technology removes the physical boundaries between clinician and patient, making telemedicine consultations a true interactive experience by delivering real-time video conferencing in full frame, full motion, and in full color. The Veridigm proprietary technology allows for the safe transmission of ultra large data files, such as detailed x-rays and radiological images that will allow specialists to read and interpret 'online'.

Savvy investors looking for hot stocks and early shareholder entry points may start to consider telemedicine companies for their next investment opportunity. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services projects that annual health care expenditures will reach $4.0 trillion by 2015. As such, telemedicine services should play a large role in this growth, as it provides our health care industry with efficient and cost-reducing solutions, while opening the door for companies like Veridigm and others to embrace the opportunity.
